Pets With Special Needs

These babies are our special needs pets. As their title indicates, they require extra attention and care, generally in the form of medication or mere caution. However, these animals are just as loyal, friendly, and loveable as our other pets, and potentially more so due to the amount of care you provide them. Please open your hearts and consider adopting one of our special needs animals.

Greg

This is Greg. Greg is a very good-looking young man who is probably under 2 years old. Greg is mostly blind, but he can possibly see some shadows. This doesn't seem to slow him down at all though, he is a very outgoing and happy dog. He hops like a bunny when he walks because he's not too sure where he's going, but his volunteer has been using a harness on walks to help guide him and wearing a little jingle bell so it's easy for him to follow her around.

He has been learning commands like watch and stop so he doesn't run into things. Greg is so full of zest for life and has so much love to give. When he meets new people he jumps on them and gives them hugs and kisses. He gets very happy when he's "found" someone and it's almost become a game to him. He will run to you, jump around excitedly, run away, and come back to find you. =)

Greg can also be calm when he's sure of what's going on around him and likes to lay in the grass and feel the sun on his skin. He isn't too big on toys because he can't always find them, but he does quite enjoy a big fluffy stuffed animal and meaty treats. Greg would love to have a dog buddy, he is very playful. We don't know how Greg is with cats but I worry cats would quickly figure out his weakness and torture him lol Greg needs a home to call his own so he can settle in to a routine and be the best pittie he can be =) don't overlook this boy because of his disability, he will not disappoint you! He is a one in a million, once in a lifetime dog.

Mr. Rogers
Mr. Rogers was dropped on our front door on 03/27/12. He is a big sweet boy, but be warned. . . he is a little escape artist. Maybe he wasn't dropped, but escaped from his home. Regardless. . we have him now and we will do our very best to find this sweet 8 year old a loving home.

Oopsi

Oopsi was found on 12/8/10 in Cherry Hill. She is estimated to be about 5 years old. Oopsi loves to be pet and is very affectionate and loving. She would do well in a home with another animal (dog or cat) that likes to snuggle and groom each other. Oopsi loves getting belly rubs, and head scratches. She LOVES snuggling up with the other cats and dogs in foster care. She is a gentle and laid back girl that is quiet and calm.

Who knows what kind of life this girl has had! She was terrified of people but loves other cats and dogs. Finally after 5 months of working with her she is finally gaining our trust - wet food has always been an incentive! She is adorable and very curious, when she wants something such as her wet food she'll tell you with a cute voice. If you have the time and patience to work with this young lady I assure you-you won't be sorry. Please email Diane at dianaray71@hotmail.com to find out more about her!

Skoochie
Skoochie is a lovable, yet mischievous little 3 month old boy (DOB 7/19/11). Skoochie started out in this life in horrendous conditions. Paula, Skoochie and Angie's foster mom, rescued Skoochie from an abandoned warehouse. Skoochie was starved and lived in almost complete blackness with two more kittens. By the time Paula was able to rescue these kittens, she could only save Skooch and one kitten-she didn't make it in time to save the third. Skooch and the other kitten were very sick, both with extremely bad eye infections. The other kitten, Magpie, has unfortunately lost sight in both eyes. He will stay with his foster mom. Skooch is now a healthy, happy boy. His eyes have cleared up well beyond his foster mom's expectations. He will, however, require a little extra TLC. Skooch does not have eyelids. All this means is that maybe once a month, his eyelashes will need trimming so that they do not grow into eyes. Most kitties without eyelids usually require daily or every other day eye drops or some sort of eye lubrication to help keep their eyes from drying out. His foster mom, in the time she had him, reported that either once or twice a week she would administer a little otc eye lubrication gel. Paula has reported that between trimming his eyelashes as needed, and using a little eye ointment once or twice a week was enough to keep Skoochie's eyes clear and bright, without any signs of dryness or irritation. Skoochie is very good about sitting for the eye drops/gel. As far as trimming the eyelashes: you will either need a friend or family member to help out. Someone needs to hold him, as the other trims the lashes with small, rounded tip cosmetic scissors. Or, as some pet parents prefer, you can always speak with your vet to set up a trimming schedule, or even speak to your groomer about trimming his lashes. It is a small price to pay for what you will get in return from Skoochie. He loves to play. He plays very well with dogs, cats, and kittens. He likes all sorts of toys and scratching posts. He loves to sit on windowsills, especially when the sun is shining. He thoroughly enjoys his foster mom's cat tree. After he is done playing either by himself or with the other animals, that's when Skoochie gets all sweet and becomes a lap kitty. He really enjoys attention, even if its just lying down on the couch getting his head or belly rubbed while you watch tv. He has no problem cuddling up with doggies or kitties for nap time. He welcomed his foster mom home every day from work during the time she had him. He brought so much love and happiness into his foster home, you would never know just what kind of terrible conditions this little boy suffered through. He might need a little more attention than other kittens, but he certainly needs and deserves it. He's come along way out of the silent darkness--if you're home is warm, filled with light and love, and you are looking to find whatever little piece is missing-look no further. Skoochie is that extra joy that you have been looking for and more.

Sparkler

Sparkler is currently in foster care because she is blind and she needs one pill per day for her blood pressure. She takes the pill very easily, and it only costs $26 per month for the pills. She's eating well, using the litter box with no problem, and grooming herself just fine. She will be blind for the rest of her life though, which should be a long one. She will need to continue to take blood pressure medication the rest of her life so we've listed her as special needs. Maybe someone out there could give a quiet, loving, patient home, to this poor gentle soul who hasn't had much luck in life. Please contact the foster mom for more information about Sparkler, her number is 856-404-7118.

Sparkler is a sweet, mellow girl. She is about 6 years old and she was found in Sicklerville on 12/17/10 - that's right: she's been looking for a home for over year now!

Sparkler adores attention and petting and used to follow volunteers around the adoption room when she was at Petsamart, until she gets it! Sparkler likes to cuddle up on your lap and will give you back all the love you give to her! If you are looking for a nice calm, friendly, lap cat, then this sweet girl is the perfect cat for you!

Trinket
Trinket is marked as a special needs cat, but his needs aren't that special. He has FIV, but that is by no means a death sentence. All you need to do is keep him INDOORS, healthy and of course give him plenty of love and affection. This sweet, lovable boy was found in Camden on 03/23/11 and he is about 2 yrs old. Trinket is active and playful, and he loves scratchies. He is really cute and wants you to come to the shelter and check him out.
